Johann Harms Block was in the first generation of his family to adopt the surname BLOCK for record-
keeping purposes as a result of the order for all East Frisian familes to stop changing their surnames
from generation to generation as they and all of their fellow countryment had done for hundreds of years.
Patronymic surname assignment persisted only when it cam time to give the middle names for all of the children (male and female). This custom persists to this day.
