2. In 1846 James came to Texas, and settled in San Augustine. In 1848, he moved to Goliad County, Texas. 1

3. James Burke served in the Mexican - American War under Captain Wheeler 1

4. Military Service: Served on the frontier, in the defense of Texas. Was stationed for a while on the San Antonio river., 1849. 1

5. Occupation: Elected County Clerk for ten consecutive years, 1850. 1

6. Military Service: Enlisted in Wood's regiment, Company A, 7th Texas Mounted regiment, 1861-1865. 1

7. Occupation: Served as Sheriff, 1874-1876. 1

8. Occupation: Re-elected as County Clerk where he was still serving in 1889 at the time of his biography, 1876. 1

9. Physical Description: He was 6 feet in height, erect and soldierly in his bearing. He had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and weighed 175 pounds. 1
