JACOB H. FRY
I remember standing in a bedroom at my grandmother’s home staring at a picture on the wall. The stern, unsmiling face of a gray bearded man stared back at me. This was my great grandfather, Jacob H. Fry. I knew nothing about him but I heard the grownups talking around the table that Jacob was acquainted with Frank and Jesse James. This fascinated me. I wished I had known Jacob but he died before I was born. It was in recent years that I began my quest to learn more about the family I was part of. With much research and a lot of help by other family members a picture of Jacob began to form in my mind.
Jacob H. Fry was the third child of five born to Reverend Enoch Frey and his wife, the former Miss Catherine Kline. Jacob was born July 12, 1849, probably in Washington or Frederick County, Maryland. When Jacob was seven years old his mother died just after Christmas, December 28, 1856.
Jacob’s father, Enoch, struggled to raise five children by himself until he married Henrietta Klein, possibly a relative of his first wife. This reunion resulted in ten additional children; all born after Enoch and Henrietta moved the family from Maryland to Indiana soon after their marriage in June, 1858.
Jacob seems to have had a falling out with his father, Enoch, sometime after the move to Madison Co, Indiana. He left the family home about the time of the beginning of the Civil War and joined other relatives in northeast Missouri. He tried to enlist in the Union Army in Keokuk, Iowa, and was turned down by the mustering officer on October 10, 1861. Perhaps the reason he was turned down was that he was only twelve years of age at the time. Jacob was near his 16th birthday when the war ended in 1865. It was between this time and 1870 as near as I can tell, that Jacob changed the spelling of his last name to F-R-Y and moved to the western side of the State of Missouri. Several other members of the Frey (Fry) family lived in the western part of Missouri along the Kansas border at this time. Jacob’s uncle Elias is known to have lived in or near Warrensburg, Missouri at this time. Jacob later told his son, Vernie, that he (Jacob) had a falling out with his father (Enoch) and that was when he decided to change the spelling of his last name to F-R-Y. It may have been this problem between father and son which precipitated the move to Missouri for Jacob. It is not known if Jacob ever corresponded with his father again.
It was here on the western border of Missouri that the family legend has Jacob becoming acquainted with Jesse James and his gang. I have heard since early childhood, stories of Jesse James coming to the Fry homestead to rest men and horses and for a hot meal, no doubt prepared by Martha Fry, Jacob’s first wife. On one occasion Jesse and another member of his gang, possibly Frank James were hidden in a haystack on the Fry farm when members of a posse came looking for them. The family stories say that Jesse left a dollar gold piece under his plate after eating a meal in Jacob’s home.
Jacob met his first wife, Martha, in Bates County Missouri. Martha, the daughter of David and Nancy Phibbs, was born January 8, 1852. Martha had a sister, Samantha and a brother, John, a former confederate soldier. Both were older than herself. Martha and Jacob were married April 16, 1871. Jacob and Martha resided in Bates County, probably in the small town of Amoret, Missouri. It was here in Amoret that they were blessed with their first child, a daughter called Zadie Belle. Her given name may have been Sarah Belle. I am continuing to research her life story. In any case Zadie Belle, as she was known all of her life, was born July 18, 1875. She married William M. Rhodes March 6, 1898 in Fort Scott, Kansas. Zadie and “Will” Rhodes are buried side by side in the Bean Memorial Cemetery in Little River, Kansas.
Jacob may have started a sawmill business a little north of Amoret, near Amsterdam, Missouri, in a very small community called Mulberry. It was here that Martha, his wife of nineteen years, died March 3, 1890. She is buried in the Mulberry Cemetery. (See map included with this chapter)
Jacob did not remain a widower very long. Only six months after the death of Martha, he married a niece of Martha’s named Amanda Lee Phibbs, the pretty daughter of John and Mary Elizabeth Phibbs. (I have included the wedding picture of Jacob and Amanda in this chapter). John Phibbs who had been a brother-in-law to Jacob now became a father-in-law to him. Amanda Lee Phibbs was born May 17, 1871, one month after her aunt Martha had married the handsome Jacob Fry. Jacob, 41 years of age and Amanda, 19 years old, were married September 24, 1890, in Butler, Missouri. (See a copy of their marriage certificate included with this chapter).
Jacob and Amanda Fry had a son, born May 22, 1891, whom they named Vernie Jacob Fry. This fine young man was destined to be my grandfather and the inspiration for this history.
Less than two years after the birth of my grandfather, Vernie, Amanda was once again about to give birth, but this time it would not be cause for celebration. On February 21, 1893, Amanda gave birth to a daughter, which she and Jacob planned to name Rosa Lee. Tragically, there were complications with the childbirth and Amanda died two days later, on February 23rd. Little Rosa Lee died the next day. Amanda Lee, not yet 22 years of age, was buried with her baby in her arms, next to Jacob’s first wife in Mulberry Cemetery.
My wife, Marilyn, and I visited Amsterdam, Missouri, in the summer of 2000, located Mulberry Cemetery and found the graves of Martha and Amanda. The stones were in remarkably good shape thanks to the efforts of George Phibbs, a descendant of Martha’s and of Vernie Ray Fountain, a great-grandson of Jacob and Amanda. Carved on Amanda’s stone are these words “Weep not for her who meekly led a life of piety and love. Whose unassuming virtue shed a hallowed influence from above.”
Jacob and his son Vernie then moved to northeast Missouri where Jacob met and married Mary Welch. Mary was born October 22, 1862. She and Jacob were married about 1895. Vernie called his new stepmother “Mame”.
It is believed that Jacob and Mary lived near Keokuk, Iowa at the time of their marriage, and Jacob may have been employed running a sawmill. After some time they moved to Kahoka, Missouri where I believe Jacob ran a hotel. They then moved to the community of Liberty Church where Jacob ran a sawmill for awhile before moving once again, this time to Williamstown, Missouri, where he once again ran a hotel.
From Williamstown they moved to Bransville, Missouri, where Jacob returned to the sawmill trade. Bransville is near West Plains, Missouri. It was here in Bransville that Jacob had an accident. He caught his foot in some machinery and as a result of the accident caught blood poisoning and had his foot amputated back to the heel. He had a wooden foot made, the leg part laced up to the knee and Jacob wore this all the time except to sleep. He never complained of pain. This wooden foot was given to Roy Fry after Jacob’s death and is now in the possession of Vernie Ray Fountain.
Jacob’s wife, Mary, died March 20, 1920. Jacob, now nearing 71 years of age did not marry again. In his later years he moved into the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Vernie and Lola Fry, in Wyaconda, Missouri.
It was here that Jacob died April 22, 1930. He was buried in the Wyaconda, Missouri Cemetery on April 25, 1930. He rests near other members of the Fry family, but surprisingly, far from any of his three wives.
I wish I had known Jacob. I wonder if he often thought of Amanda and the daughter they had lost. I wonder if he had any regrets. I wonder if he really did know Jesse James. I wonder……..
